QuiBids.com, the leading penny auction site, has just announced a new auction format to their queue: Global Auctions!
From the QuiBids Blog:
Starting Tuesday, April 24, QuiBids will offer Global Auctions! As in, our customers may now compete for items with users in other countries. Break out the exclamation points, because this is huge news!!!
By pooling markets together, we’re able to offer even MORE products for auction. More products mean MORE variety, and MORE winners. Every. Single. Day.
Global Auctions are the latest QuiBids innovation to accommodate our growing customer base (we’re now nearing eight million registered accounts) as we expand overseas. Now our customers in smaller markets like Canada and Australia (and eventually Spain, Germany, and the U.K.) will all be able to see just as many auctions as our U.S. customers do. We’re obviously very excited about this development, but mostly just because it’ll enable us to serve more customers more effectively as we expand.
Keep an eye out for our nifty little planet Earth icon, which indicates a Global Auction from a standard one. You’ll also be able to tell where your bidding competition hails from, by hovering your cursor over their username in your auction’s bidding history.
You might also wonder just how we’re able to engineer auctions between countries with differing currency. Our QuiBids 101 article on Global Auctions explains this issue at greater (and somewhat more boring) depth, but suffice it to say that we’re mindful of the exchange rate, and that users in differing countries may be bidding on comparable items. Where a U.S. customer bids on a $15 Walmart gift card, an Australian opponent may see an Amazon card worth the equivalent in Australian dollars (AUD).
It should also be noted that Global Auctions are not universal, meaning that the majority of QuiBids auctions are still divvied up by country. Just keep an eye out for that Global Auction icon if you’re ever in doubt.
Shortly after the above announcement was made, a few vocal bidders expressed their dismay, stating that auctions would be "harder to win than ever!" However, if one reads the announcement carefully, they will see that not all auctions will be global auctions, and the ones that are will be clearly marked and bidders will still be playing against bidders of their own country. Also, despite the fact that QuiBids has now been open for two and a half years, bidders are still scoring amazing deals on QuiBids auctions!
For those who are still wary of the change, it's a little too soon to pass judgment on whether or not this will be a "good move" in the long run. Matt Beckham and his team did not get to where they are today by not taking chances and making changes. Let's continue supporting them through this venture and see where the path may lead.
The PennyBurners Team is confident in the QuiBids Team and we wish them well and much success as they move forward!
